Outline
The Support Office for Female Researchers in Hokkaido University (FResHU) has been established within the
framework of Hokkaido University’s policy of gender equality promotion. Focusing on the specific problematic
of scientists, the Office is responsible for the provision of practical support, information and advice, and for the implementation of promotion policies. Female undergraduate and graduate students, research and teaching staff alike need a learning and working environment in which their talents can develop to their full potential. For this purpose, the Office seeks to provide the beneficiaries of the program not only with specific guidance and mentoring, but also with sources of inspiration and role models, and by striving to induce changes in the general attitude towards women in academia. The Office FResHU is also always looking for creative solutions to problems and challenges which women often face while they are studying or building a career, in particular life events like marriage, the birth and upbringing of children, or the mobility and career of their partners.
Hokkaido University has committed itself to a “Triple Twenties Policy”: by 2020, 20% of all staff in teaching
and research positions should be women. To achieve this goal, the University has devised a “positive action scheme”
which incorporates substantial incentives for faculties and departments to select and appoint women. In addition,
the University will reach out to young women in High School, guiding and supporting their future study choices, to
address the issue of female representation in science at the grass root or young sprout level.
The Office FResHU strives to be a one-stop contact point where women scientists can obtain information and support
throughout their career and life stages. They are welcome at any time: when in trouble, when facing a challenge,
or simply when in need of information and FResHU company.
